"Old Best Friend" is the A part of the third episode of Season 1 of Pepper Ann and the fourth segment overall. It was paired with "Crunch Pod" and first aired on September 27, 1997.

Plot[]

When Pepper Ann's old friend Brenda is moving to Hazelnut, Pepper Ann tells Nicky and Milo about how she met Brenda at Cubby Camp, and how she sadly parted ways with her. When Brenda arrives, Pepper Ann introduces her to Nicky and Milo and offers to give a tour around Hazelnut, to which Brenda happily obliges. She forms "The Brenda Express" with PA and her friends. When Brenda expresses her disinterest in books and video game, Nicky and Milo leave Pepper Ann behind. The two start spending time together, all the while PA feeling slightly uncomfortable through it all. When she tells Brenda she has to babysit Moose as an excuse to escape from her, she follows suite. Brenda meets Lidiya, who suggests she should have a sleepover if it's okay with Brenda's parents. PA hides in the bathroom and shortly after, Brenda happily exclaims she can stay. With all the pressure going to her, PA has no idea what to do, to which her reflection suggests to tell her it isn't working out. Brenda barges into the bathroom to check on PA and asks if PA minds if she stays, to which PA claims she doesn't.

The next day, Pepper Ann is hiding behind a tree in the Hazelnut schoolyard with her hair all braided up. She escorts Nicky and Milo to her position to check if Brenda is following them. She then tells them that her and Brenda have nothing in common anymore, accidently hitting Milo in the eye while shaking her head. Nicky suggests to tell Brenda, to which PA refuses. Just then, Brenda shows up in a white t shirt and spinning a staff in her hand, gleefully singing her own version of "name game" song. With Milo being hit in the eye again, Nicky walks him to the nurse. PA wants to come but Nicky asks her about Brenda. Things get crazy when Pepper Ann tries desperately to escape from Brenda, only to run right into her everywhere she goes with "The Name Game" playing throughout the sequence. When Mr. Carter asks who's making all the racket, PA says it was her and gets 1 hour of detention. Brenda wants detention too and throws a paper ball at Mr. Carter to get it.

Pepper Ann once again grabs Nicky and Milo and takes them to another hiding place, saying she has to keep running to maintain distance from Brenda. Nicky still suggests telling Brenda the truth. PA is VERY reluctant to do so but her reflection behind her says to do it. So Pepper Ann approaches Brenda, who confesses about how she and PA have nothing in common anymore, and has become friends with Tessa and Vanessa. Pepper Ann is devastated by this as Nicky and Milo come to comfort her as a slow medley reprise of "Name Game" is played over a tribute to PA and Brenda's friendship that progressively gets more exaggerated.
